One of my favorite things about SNL are the monologues. Over the years, the guest presenters perform an opening monologue. What does it take to write a good monologue? I believe it takes some creative juices, truth and great delivery. I think back to Taylor Swift's SNL monologue a few years ago. Her 'song' poked fun at the various failed relationships she had with her exes all while claiming that her song was not about them. It's catchy, cute and hilarious. Her timing is excellent. Her words are simple yet because of her delivery, there is an added effect to them. Writing for comedy is one of the hardest things to do in the business. Major Kudos to the writers of SNL. They are some of the best in the biz. Take a look at T Swift's monologue and enjoy!

A little bit of Selena Gomez, some Taylor Swift and a whole lot of Colbie Caillat is what I need to get through a writing assignment. I love music and it gives me the extra motivation to get an assignment done. Now, I have a wide range of musical taste so picking something to listen to is somewhat difficult. I like to go for music that isn't too distracting. For me, the best music is Colbie Caillat. Her music is so mellow and gives out amazing vibes. I love her to death. If you are looking for some chill music, you can't go wrong with Caillat. If music with words are too distracting, instrumental music is the way to go. I love listening to Chopin and Bach. But the guy everyone needs to give a chance is Maurice Ravel. He is absolutely impressive. Listen to his string quartet in the F major. I became a fan of him the first minute of hearing this masterpiece. Listening to classical music is a great to focus on your assignment. Enjoy some Ravel performed by the Hagen Quartet! After the recent tragedies of my dear second home, I want to take this broadcast writing blog down a different road. Instead of writing tips or what-to-dos, I want to remind people that covering a tragedy of this magnitude or anything similar is extremely hard to broadcast. It's mostly on the spot ethical decisions, fast paced delivery and minds trying to remember what they just said three minutes ago because a ton of new info was thrown at them. This is where the fact checking goes thin and angry people protesting that the news just wants to lie to us. Now I can't vouch for any news station but I can tell you as a journalist/broadcaster with integrity, they are trying. We want to give the quickest, most up to date, accurate information possible. But as perfection goes, it is impossible. Please be patient with the news, we should feel privileged that we are able to get instant information at the palm of our hands unlike our fathers of yore.
Another thing, don't be so quick to believe everything that is in the media. Especially if they are not a reputable source. That only spreads more chaos and confusion. Remember, we want clarity for such tragedies to be resolved. In the midst of the recent attacks in Paris, Beirut, Baghdad, Japan, Kenya, and Mexico my thoughts and prayers go out to humanity. God is good. Remember that. Faith=Love=Hope Over the past week, I learned a lot about the broadcasting world. I learned that in my future I will get fired, probably not last more than two years in one job, will work with people I hate, move around a lot, might have to do assignments that I will hate. Why am I still trying to crack into the business? To be honest, the stories, the thrill, and the excitement of the unknown are what keeps me going. I want to explore the world, meet amazing people and share stories. In my broadcasting class, we had two guest speakers come in. These men are full of wisdom and so knowledgable in their trade, it's almost overwhelming. Add to that an amazing teacher who has the voice of Zeus. I know I'm in the right place to learn about broadcasting and Advertising/Public Relations.
What I got from them is that writing is something you fine tune. Anyone can write. But few write well. I know I need to improve. I'm thankful to my college of journalism here at UNL because they give me the resources to write. Writing can take you anywhere. It has sent the our guest speakers all around the world. From London to Beijing to some obscure town in the middle of nowhere. I want that. I want to come back from an assignment and be able to tell people things that they can only imagine. Writing is a portal that is able to anything. I'm more than anxious to see where this will take me. All I hope is that writing can take me back to Paris. But hey, I wouldn't say no going to a tiny village in Djibouti either. |
